Recently, a number of British dental experts in the oral medicine journal “Dental Clinical Experimental Research” published a paper pointed out that electronic cigarettes almost do not cause yellow teeth, smokers to switch to electronic cigarettes can effectively improve the oral environment.

According to the analysis of the paper, 27 related studies worldwide confirmed this conclusion. Among them, the tar produced when cigarettes are burned can “cause huge changes in tooth color,” and 11 staining compounds in cigarette smoke continue to destroy tooth enamel, exacerbating the problem of tooth yellow. Even if smokers change dentures, it doesn’t help.
In contrast, all evidence confirms that e-cigarettes have significantly lower levels of tooth staining than cigarettes.“Because e-cigarettes don’t burn, they don’t produce those stained particles in cigarette smoke, so they don’t overdamage tooth enamel and make teeth yellow. The effect of e-cigarettes on denture materials such as resin composites is even more minimal.”The authors wrote in the research paper.
In recent years, a number of studies have confirmed that the risk of periodontal disease among e-cigarette users is much lower than that among smokers. After smokers switch to e-cigarettes, the oral environment will be effectively improved. In March 2023, research published by Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences) showed that compared with cigarettes, e-cigarettes are less harmful to smokers’ oral health and may be less prone to periodontal-related oral diseases. At the same nicotine concentration, the apoptosis rate of human gingival epithelial cells exposed to cigarette smoke agglutination was 26.97%, which was 2.15 times higher than that of electronic cigarette.
Philip M. Preshaw, one of the study authors and dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Dundee in the UK, pointed out back in 2019 that e-cigarettes can be used to treat oral diseases:“More and more evidence shows that e-cigarettes can help smokers quit smoking effectively. For smokers with periodontal disease, quitting smoking can improve their oral health by at least 30%.”In a research paper published in 2019, he suggested that dentists offer e-cigarettes to smokers with periodontitis to improve their success in quitting.
“We hope that dentists will put aside prejudices and learn more about e-cigarettes, especially the positive effects of e-cigarettes on the oral health of sick smokers.” British dental expert R. Holliday said: “Because the vast majority of oral diseases patients are already smokers, if you are a dentist, your smokers want to use e-cigarettes to help quit, please do not stop him.”
